My current computer build traces back to 2018. Even though I have upgraded few parts over the years, the baseline configuration remained pretty much the same which is based on an Intel Coffee Lake processor. I wrote a blog post when I was buying all the parts. Back in 2023, I attempted to get a new computer but that idea had to be scrapped.
Now, this year I am going for a new build for myself. This configuration definitely does not include top of the line parts available right now rather they are carefully chosen so that I can use for my day to day tasks smoothly. Let's take a look at the specs.
Processor: | Intel Core i9-12900T |
---|---|
CPU Cooler: | Noctua NH-L9i-17xx Chromax Black |
CPU Frame: | Thermal Grizzly Intel 1700 LT |
Motherboard: | ASRock B760M-HDV/M.2 |
Memory: | Crucial Pro 32GB DDR5 5600MHz |
GPU: | Nvidia RTX A1000 |
SSD: | Samsung 990 EVO 1TB PCIe Gen 4.0 |
WiFi: | Intel BE200 WiFi 7 |
Now, looking at the specifications one can easily understand this is definitely not a gaming computer. Let's talk about them to get a clearer understanding on my point of view.
First off, I picked rather a low powered Intel 12th Gen i9-12900T CPU which you won't see on other people's build for the most of the part. I did some research on this and used Intel 12th Gen i7-12700 for a brief time and what I understood is that these CPUs runs fairly hot. Hot enough that the low profile CPU cooler can't keep it under control. To keep my computer cool, I went ahead with the "T" series processor. This CPU runs fairly cooler than i7-12700T processor even though it's a lower tiered CPU. The i9-12900T has enough cores for fairly serious multitasking. My computer generally runs for long so that was important choice to make.
My previous experience with ASRock brand was quite good in fact I am currently using one of their motherboard as well. So, I didn't hesitate to grab another one from their current product line that support newer generations of Intel CPU. I picked a DDR5 memory supported motherboard which has two M.2 slot for NVME SSD. This way I won't have to rely on SATA SDD anymore. This motherboard has another M.2 slot that can be used for WiFi module which was on my radar from the get go. This is one of those feature that was crucial for me as I don't want to use any single slot PCIe adapter card for this.
For CPU cooler, Noctua is the brand that I rely on and I am currently using a low profile CPU cooler from them which is simply amazing. This fan doesn't make any noise and keeps my CPU cool enough even when I am doing video encoding tasks. My case is a fairly small one thus I am not making any changes there. I will see how this Noctua NH-L9i-17xx Chromax Black cooler works with the CPU. I will go for a bigger one if I have to but I am trying to stick with low profile cooler at this point.
I am currently using 32GB DDR4 memory which seems enough for my usage. So, sticking with 32GB DDR5 this time around as well and Crucial is a good brand anyway. For GPU I am currently using Nvidia RTX A1000 which is a PCIe 4.0 based card currently running at PCIe 3.0. A bit sad but this card will find it's playground soon enough.
Like always, my boot drive will remain a Samsung SSD but I am picking the newer model to run at PCIe 4.0. For WiFi and Bluetooth needs, I am stuck with Intel BE200 as I couldn't find anything better yet. These are smaller parts which can be upgraded anytime so I am not all too worried but I am happy with this card so far.
