Major Quake hits South-East Asia

As I am writing post, dozens if not hundreds of people are still trapped inside a collapsed skyscraper in Bangkok, Thailand. More than hundreds of people are being reported as dead. Catastrophic videos are coming in that shows the destruction caused by the earthquake. I am watching live news updates and reading live coverage from various sources. Pretty much all the major news sites around the world are focusing on this developing story.

Somehow, some media sites are reporting much more devastating news which I don't even want to think about. Here is another video that shows the total collapse of a multi-storied building.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), it was a 7.7 magnitude earthquake which originated near Mandalay of Myanmar. Few minutes later a 6.4 magnitude earthquake was felt followed by few more which are of 4.5+ magnitude that toppled buildings, ruptured roads and also caused the collapse of the well known Ava Bridge. It occurred as the result of strike slip faulting between Eurasia and Indian tectonic plates.

My family is in Bangladesh right now and I spoke with my Mom few hours back. A friend of mine texted me few minutes back stating that he didn't feel the quake which is a bit weird nevertheless. However, I am more than happy to know that no life has been lost there.

Praying for safety and security for the people of that region.

March 29, 2025 Update: The death toll continues to rise. Over one thousand people has already lost their lives. Search for survivors continues in Myanmar. Thailand authorities received more than two thousands of reports of damaged buildings so far.
