Raspberry Pi 5 16GB Variant Goes on Sale

Back in 2023 when Raspberry Pi 5 was announced, there were only two different model available for consumers as far as the memory capacity was concerned. One of the was of 4GB and another one had 8GB memory. Later on another version was released with only 2GB memory. Only couple of days back in 2025, a newer model with 16GB memory has been introduced.

Given the specification of a Raspberry Pi SBC, it is quite understandable that people uses these little computers for wide range of purpose and not so surprisingly most of the application works just fine with 4-8GB of memory. In fact, certain applications doesn't even require more than 2GB of memory. From that point of view, 16GB memory might sound a bit overkill but once again not so surprisingly, it's not.

Despite the fact that Raspberry Pi 5 already packs almost three times more power than it's earlier mode Raspberry Pi 4, the uses cases for new model expanded it's horizon in a big way. It is being expected that it will continue to grow with the wide scale adoption of large language models which benefits from having more storage per core.

Even though the Raspberry Pi OS has been tuned to use low base memory, the larger memory will also benefit from full fledged OS like Ubuntu. Specially for those who intend to use these computer as a desktop replacement.
