I honestly do not remember when exactly I purchased this flash drive or from where. Was it from any online market place or from a retail outlet remains a mystery to me to this date. Somehow, I still have this drive on my possession and thought of sharing my two cents about it.
I looked up at Transcend website to find more details about this drive. Based on the serial number, Transcend website states it is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 type device. However, when I checked this drive using HWiNFO, it showed up as USB 3.0 device. No matter whatever the actual specifications are it is safe to say that it at least meets the USB 3.0 standard regardless, at least on paper.

Model | TS16GJF700 |
---|---|
Capacity | 16GB |
Interface | USB 3.1 |
Dimensions (WxDxH) | 0.73" x 0.34" x 2.42" |
Weight: | 0.30oz |
Supports | Windows, Mac, Linux. |
Since we have the basic information out of the way, now let's take a look at the responses that I got after running performance test from Windows.
Random 16.0 Read | 13.34 MB/s |
---|---|
Sequential 64.0 Read | 117.93 MB/s |
Sequential 64.0 Write | 21.51 MB/s |
Avg. Read time with Sequential Writes | 5.131 ms |
Latency 95th Percentile | 7.099 ms |
Latency Maximum | 2543.027 ms |
Avg. Read Time with Random Writes | 7.791 ms |
The test result is not something to be excited about. Rather I am a bit frustrated by the results that I have received. Forget about the theoretical maximum read speed of an USB 3.0 device, it's not anywhere close to that. Is it possible that the flash quality has been degraded over the years because of usage? that is also a probability.
I do not use this flash drive for any serious purpose that requires very good read or write speed. Being able to transfer smaller files is good enough for me. What's even more surprising is that, I still got roughly six more months before it's warranty expires. Yeah, this drive is almost five years old. So, can't really complain too much about it.
